Panhead
A panhead is the most common head found on tripods and are the cheaper of the two main head types. They can be adjusted in all three dimensions by way of three levers. This can make this type of head slow to use, although they are considered the perfect head for landscape shots that include a horizon line or for architectural photography.
Ballhead
Ballheads consist of a platform that is mounted on a large ball that in turn fits into the base of the head forming a ball and socket joint. Ballheads allows a camera to be aimed quickly, when you have your angle you lock the ball with a single locking knob and you are ready to take the picture.
The chief problem with ballhead mounts is that they are expensive and cheaper models can often disappoint.
